Where to Stay in Santa Catalina, Panama

A local guide to hotels, beaches and getting here, from Hotel Hibiscus Garden at Bliss Beach

Santa Catalina Guide

Santa Catalina at a Glance

Santa Catalina is a small surf town on Panama’s Pacific coast in Veraguas province, about 355 km (220 miles) by road from Panama City. It is famous for consistent surf and as the gateway to Coiba National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the top dive destinations in the Eastern Pacific.

Places to stay range from simple rooms in town, close to the surf breaks and dive shops, to quieter beachfront hotels just outside town. Hotel Hibiscus Garden at Bliss Beach is one of the latter: 15 rooms on Playa Lagartero, a minute’s walk from the sand, with breakfast included and a restaurant, yoga deck, horses and a recording studio on site.

Two places to stay

In Santa Catalina town. Stay here if you want to walk to the town beaches, surf breaks, dive shops and restaurants. The town beaches are the busier side of Santa Catalina.

On Playa Lagartero, just outside town. Playa Lagartero is a secluded stretch of dark volcanic sand where the jungle meets the Pacific. Unlike the busier town beaches, it is rarely crowded: expect tide pools at low tide, calm swimming at the south end and sunrises over the ocean. This is where you’ll find our rooms, each a one-minute walk from the beach.

Before You Book

What to Look For in a Santa Catalina Hotel

Santa Catalina is remote, so a few practical details make a big difference to your stay.

Getting there

The last 20 km of road is unpaved and can be rutted in the rainy season. Check whether your hotel has parking, or choose a shuttle that drops you at the door.

Food on site

Town restaurants are a drive away from beach hotels outside town, so an on-site restaurant matters. Ours serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

Connectivity

Cell service can be spotty along the coast. Look for WiFi throughout the property and download offline maps before you arrive.

Cash

Bring cash for travel and local purchases, and ask your hotel about payment options before you arrive.

Early starts

Coiba boat trips, fishing and dive departures leave early from Santa Catalina, so a hotel that helps you arrange them saves time.

Room comforts

Check for air conditioning, hot water and whether breakfast is included. Every room at Hotel Hibiscus Garden has AC, WiFi and breakfast.
